European Article Number (EAN) is a standard describing a barcode symbology and numbering system used in global trade to identify a specific retail product type, in a specific packaging configuration, from a specific manufacturer.

How many digits is a European Article Number (EAN) ?

European Article Number is either an 8 digit number or a 13 digit number (EAN 8 or EAN 13). The EAN 8 and EAN 13 are the numbers used to mark packages with a unique number. 

What are EAN 13 Standards ?

  • EAN 13 is the most commonly used EAN barcode internationally
  • Most widely used barcodes 12 digit codes prepended with 0
  • EANs are unique and registered with Global Electronic Party Information Registry
